Meet Hugh

What does your role at LAKE involve?

I’m a technical consultant so I look after everything technical, including planning, cloud deployment, installation, and support of all software after it’s been installed.

How long have you been with LAKE and what did you do before you joined?

I joined on April 1st in 2020 and before that I was a business intelligence specialist, primarily working with the Microsoft business intelligence stack.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

I really enjoy the variety. No two projects are ever the same and I really like that. There are always new things that need to be considered and new problems to be overcome. I’m a problem solver so this is great for me.

If you had to pick out three achievements or pieces of work that you’re particularly proud of from your time at LAKE, what would they be?

The first thing would be succeeding to the level that I have without prior web and applications installation experience. Being able to contribute to the team to a high level is a big achievement of mine.

The second one would be working with colleagues to implement Infor EPM. This is an exciting new technology for me, so getting it to work and helping to package it for customers was a big win.

The third one would be my involvement in a recent project to help The Disabilities Trust move from an entirely on premise system to SunSystems Cloud. This was one of the first cloud migrations the business had delivered, so we had to manage our fair share of learning curves.

What does your background, experience and knowledge mean for customers?

My time at LAKE and experience gained in previous roles has given me in-depth knowledge of how things work at the back end, and this means I can troubleshoot more effectively. I have 16 years experience in SQL, over 10 years in business intelligence and then my time at LAKE as a technical consultant so there’s a huge amount of knowledge there.

What excites you most when you think about LAKE’s future plans and the future of business systems in general?

The challenge of moving to the cloud really interests me. It presents opportunities to learn new skills and I know LAKE are planning to be a leader in the field so it’s exciting times ahead.

What do you do when you’re not working?

When I’m not working, I’m looking after the dog and my kids. I’m also part of an autism-friendly group for local parents and children. We all meet once a month for a safe play session for the kids in a sensory environment. I also like gaming when I get a chance, whether that’s on a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation.

What is one item on your bucket list?

I’d like to go back to Hong Kong or Tokyo.
